In Zimbabwe, not all children in conflict with the law receive (free) legal assistance. They end up in prison without having had the opportunity to defend their case well. Legal services available are not necessarily child friendly.
I am currently based in Mutare, Zimbabwe to set up a pilot project and develop a project proposal as Lawyers without Borders the Netherlands is committed to contribute to the improvement of this situation and ensure free, quality and child friendly access to justice for children.
De Juncto (www.dejuncto.nl, the independent magazine for the Department of Law of Utrecht University) interviewed Ivonne Leenhouwers (project member and criminal defence lawyer) and myself before travelling to Zimbabwe. The article is in Dutch (sorry!).
“While the regular law student almost naturally thinks of a career in private practice, there are more options. Juncto talked to Lawyers without Borders […]”.
